History
In 1951, Joe Lamb was working to buy Lamb's Service from his father, Tony Lamb. The business involved sales of tires and bulk fuel and was located next to where Lamb's Store is today. That was the beginning of Joe's "business" career. One year earlier Joe had married Dorothy Hyde in the Agar Catholic Church on August 21, 1950.
In April of 1957, Joe purchased the Chevrolet franchise and building, which was located on the lots that are now home to the Onida finance office building, from Harold "Buck" Birdsall.
In 1958, Joe moved the Chevrolet business to the Lamb's service location. In 1959, the Allis Chalmers line of farm equipment was added, followed by International Harvester in 1964.
While operating Lamb's Chevrolet, Joe established Lamb's Discount Supply Store in 1967. It was located in what is now the Bright's Floor Covering building. He hired Stu Hyde as its first manager. The business is now run by Dorothy (Lamb) and her staff, including manager Roxy Grabinski, Ralph Ripley, Diane Lorenz, John Wagner, Gary Hofer, & Kraig Forgey.
Joe and Dorothy planned for their business' future, producing five children to help out. They include Danny, Nancy (Weischedel), Jamie, Jeff and Joey.
Danny joined the business full time in 1974, followed by Jamie in 1975, Jeff in 1980 and Joey in 1987. Nancy is a school teacher in Gettysburg (SD), but has also been called on in recent years to help out with the business.
In 1982, 25 years after Joe purchased the Chevrolet dealership, he transferred the dealer license to Danny.
In 1985, Lamb's Chevrolet and Implement began construction and remodeling on the former state highway shop, located on the corner of US Hwy 83 & 26. The building is now home to the operation, which includes the Chevrolet franchise, Case IH implements, along with other implement lines, bulk fuel, tire sales, parts sales, used auto sales and items too numerous to mention.
